To be successful in life, career, and academics we need to act as moral beings. We are human. We are fragile at times. We can be vulnerable to our emotions. When we are wrong, we admit our faults to ourselves and to others – we possess the quality of humility. We live in a media world that gives us messages to not behave correctly all the time. But at our core of our being, we do know what’s right and we do know what’s wrong. We need awareness and we need to practice being ethical. We act in compassion and through perspective thinking of others. This is our life’s journey.
In our classroom we will live by the motto
“ Life is a mountain and not a beach.”
We see in this visual, a solitary man a top a plateau on a mountain. The top of the mountain is in his sight, or he may think that is in sight. The journey to the top of the mountain is the journey of us and as we move towards higher achievement in our math class. The mountain represents our highest aspirations and is divine in its majesties. We start at base camp. We should make sure we have the proper equipment before we start the journey. Do we have enough water, food and clothing?
The very basic necessity we need in order to be successful in life, to be successful in math, is first to develop a concept of self through an ethical identity. These are the words we will adhere to in our classroom.
· Respect-how you treat others.
· Compassion- perspective thinking of others. Walk in another's shoes.
· Integrity- honesty with others and with ourselves.
· Perseverance (Grit) - determination.
· Humility- is not thinking less of yourself. Its thinking of yourself less. (c.s.Lewis)
· Courage- recognize our fear, act with humility and strive to do our best.
· Kaizen – social responsibility to our classroom & community.
· Responsibility (Gambatte) - be accountable for your words and actions.
That’s is the water before we start our climb up the mountain- that is our base camp.
From base camp we are ready to make our ascent. Now we kick with grit and determination. If we are honest with ourselves, then we don’t climb the mountain alone because we know that would be too dangerous. We realize also that in order to be successful, we must work as team. Working as a team requires cooperation. We become intrigued with our journey, wondering what sights the next plateau will show. If members of our team were to slip and fall, we don’t rush ahead without them. We make sure that they are alright, and that they understand that we are there for them. We understand that at times climbing the mountain is going to be arduous. We have the integrity, the knowingness of ourselves, and the creation of self-discipline to keep our feet moving.
One of the most disappointing parts of any mountaineers’ journey is when they think that they have peaked but instead, they have reached a false summit. We can’t rest on our laurels thus far. That’s when we dig down deep, remembering our goals, and precede with determination. Life can’t be a beach.

Example Essay on Respect by Anonymous Student
Respect shows that one values another individual no matter what race , ethnicity, or opinion that individual holds. First, a person needs to respect themselves. Those who do not respect others often do not respect themselves. They usually seek respect by demanding it, which often frustrates everyone around them. Gaining self-respect is critical because you need to understand your own self image. Next, you need to respect others around you. This may become difficult as you may not agree with another individual's opinion in the classroom. However, respecting other's opinions will cause less tension. Also, it shows that although you may not agree with their opinion, you still respect the perspective they are coming from. Respect should start in the classroom. This character trait will carry you throughout your life, so it will be great to already have respect for other individuals when you begin your career. Respecting your colleagues will become essential whey you begin your career because respect could lead you to other career opportunities. For example, an individual lacking respect for others will most likely lose his job and/or have trouble finding a new one. While an individual with respect will likely have an easier time finding new career opportunities. Finally, respect is essential because it shows you have gratitude towards the other person. Why put down another student when you can lift them up and make a more positive work environment?
